At SRM Engineering we have fully trained and experienced staff who will be able to give you all the advice you require in the restoration of your motorcycle wheels. The Wheels Department is overseen by Jon Jolley, experienced wheel builder, with the assistance of an apprentice wheel wright.
Although we specialise in BSA motorcycles, we have carried out extensive restoration work on a wide range of other makes and models: from penny farthing wheels to work on the latest custom superbikes, our Wheel Department has the experience and skills necessary to deal with most requirements.
Restoring spoked wheels is not just about fresh paintwork and chrome - the condition of the rim and spokes determine the strength of the wheel, and hence its safety. Remember - the tension in the spokes is supporting the weight of you and your motorcycle! Thus, a wheel recondition not only adds to the aesthetic value of your machine, but also to its safety and road-worthiness.We build each wheel using only the very best components available.
Spokes are made in-house to suit each individual hub and rim combination which
ensures we always get the correct spoke length.
Years of experience have enabled us to compile a comprehensive database of wheel offsets and spoke lengths. However, we recommend that should you wish to dismantle your wheel, then care should be taken to record the wheel offset and spoke length before it is taken apart (pattern spokes are helpful).
Wheel Offset
The wheel offset is the measurement of the hub in relation to the edge of the rim.
PLEASE NOTE: There can be up to four DIFFERENT spoke lengths in some wheels.
We are able to offer the following services to renovate motorcycle wheel hubs and brake plates:-
Bead blast & polish alloy brake plate
Bead blast brake plate & polish edge
Stove enamel hub
Bead blast & polish hub
Skim motorcycle hub (complete wheel)
Reline the brake shoes with modern brake material oversize
Measure brake drum size & machine shoes to suit
Please note after we rebuild a wheel, we would recommend that the hub is skimmed as the hubs can distort when laced up. It makes sense to have your brakes working at maximum efficiency to cope with modern traffic conditions. The brake shoes can be relined and then machined to suit the newly skimmed hub to give you the maximum braking efficiency.
Conical hub repair
SRM have developed the Conical rear hub bearing housing repair. The most common problem is the worn bearing housing, and these rear hubs are almost impossible to find nowadays. We bore out the old worn housing, and insert a CNC machined sleeve complete with bearing retainer ring thread, bringing the centre back to NEW condition.
QD hub spline repair
Have a worn rear hub spline? Rivets loose? We have made the three different types of rear hub inner sleeves with the splines to Suit A7 A10 B31 B33 A50 A65 etc. The sleeve is available on its own, or you can send in your old hub for reconditioning - we strip hub, repaint the hub halves, reassemble with new inner sleeve and rivets, so the hub is as new again!
Wheel balancing
At SRM we have the latest type of wheel balancer, made specifically for motorcycle wheels only.
We can finely balance your wheel to give a smoother and more comfortable ride and check the all important seating of the tyre on the wheel rim.
