Paintwork

SRM's Paintwork Department is headed by time-served sprayer Stuart Roy.  Stove enamelling is the traditional way to restore paintwork on both frames and cycle parts, and is the 'tried and tested' method employed by us to achieve the best results for your classic motorcycle.

The stove enamelling process involves the spraying of special stove enamelling paint onto an object which is then placed in an oven and heated to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time.  This fast curing of the paint allows stoving paint to be applied in relatively thick coats to achieve an aesthetically pleasing, durable high gloss finish.

Originally, stove enamel paints were oil based, but more recently these have been superceded by modern acrylic stove enamels which have increased durability and quality of finish.  The protection and finish offered by thick stove enamel paintwork does mean that careful assembly of painted parts is of prime importance.  However, should the paintwork 'chip', it can be successfully 'touched in' (unlike some other forms of finish available).  A small container of stove enamel paint is provided with each completed job.

Prior to painting, all parts are shot blasted to eliminate all corrosion and provide a perfect key for stone enamelling primer.  To combat the problems of 'pitting' in frame tubes etc, we have special fillers to withstand high temperatures without 'lifting' or 'sagging'.  Modern stove enamel paints can be matched to most colours and some metallics, although we recommend the use of a 2-pack paint system for most metallic work.  Stove enamel paint is suitable for high temperature applications on hubs, cylinder barrels and cylinder heads (but silver is not recommended for heads).

The following prices are provided as a guide, with the frame price including two hours of preparation work, and filling of rust pits and holes.  The other prices include similar work, but extensive repair work on heavily corroded steels costs extra.  Also, if parts are heavily greased up or covered with thick road grime, degreasing and cleaning work will be charged for.
