Rolling Road Testing
SRM are proud to be the ONLY classic bike specialists in the world to have a FUCHS BE251 test bench, giving you the customer the best, most technologically advanced engine, electrical and chassis service available anywhere! Why not make this the final stage of your restoration project?
We looked for a replacement and eventually chose the FUCHS BE251, an industry standard motorcycle test bench. The FUCHS BE251 is both highly sophisticated and accurate, whilst being easy to use. It boasts a comprehensive list of motorcycle test features, including engine performance, transmission testing, exhaust gas analysis, chassis checking, ignition and electrical fault finding. The rolling road test bench features a precision made roller, which when driven by the motorcycle’s rear tyre, simulates the same forces on the motorcycle as would be experienced on the road (hills and pillion passengers can be simulated by adjusting the load controller!). The test bench does NOT put the bike under any load you would not find in road riding conditions.
By carefully measuring the movement of the roller the test bench can calculate the engine performance (BHP and torque) at the rear wheel and at the crankshaft. Transmission and ignition tests will show up any faults in these areas. The test bench features a sophisticated front wheel clamp, which holds the motorcycle in a secure position on the test bench and allows checking of the wheel alignment and suspension. The gas analyser measures the levels of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen present in the exhaust. By monitoring the comparative levels of each of these gases the efficiency of the combustion can be evaluated. The gases are measured at different engine speeds, loads and throttle openings; the test bench computer logs the results and presents them as a graph for analysis. Carburation tests (prompted by problems with original fitment carburettors) with various types of carbs have led us to recommending the use of only Mikuni carbs, which are available as complete conversion kits and have been carefully tuned and modified by SRM to our specification (double-checked with the 4 gas analyser).
If you are looking to buy, sell or just test your own motorcycle (especially after a complete restoration, before going on to the road) the following tests can be performed with the test bench to get the most out of your classic motorcycle:
Engine & Transmission Tests
- Power and torque graphs produced;
- Acceleration and response tests;
- Clutch test (tested for slip)
- Transmission losses calculated (shows worn chains etc)
- Detection of ignition/sparking problems;
- Ascertain engine condition (low compression/mechanical problem).
Carburetion Tests
- Four gas analysis at different engine speeds;
- Four gas analysis at graduated throttle openings (engine speed at 3000rpm with load control).
Electrical Tests
- Ignition timing check;
- Measurement of HT voltage (coil condition);
- Misfires (anywhere in rev change);
- Charging system check;
- Wiring/connector condition.
Chassis & Cycle Parts
- Front and rear suspension performance;
- Check on steering head / swinging arm bearings;
- Frame/wheel alignment – also with laser wheel jig;
- Dynamic wheel test.
Please note: All tests need to be PRE-BOOKED at least one week in advance. Please phone or email us for details and requirements.
